Delphi: China's new energy vehicles will soon cross the mixed stage

At the annual meeting of the China Society of Automotive Engineers in 2009, related issues concerning the development path of new energy vehicles have once again become the focus of attention in the automotive industry. Sina Automotive interviewed Li Wei, Director of Electrical Architecture/Electrical Systems at Delphi Packard Electric Systems Co., Ltd., to discuss Delphi's new energy vehicle development strategy in the Chinese market.

Sina Auto: What kind of path do you think China's new energy vehicles should develop?

Li Wei: The theme of the annual meeting of the Automotive Engineering Society is to focus on energy-saving and emission reduction. Now it looks like the development time of pure electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles will be relatively late. Now the clearer route seems to be that the development of hybrid vehicles is The first step, followed by the electric car, and finally the fuel cell car. Nowadays, domestic technology is more mature than weak mixing technology. 90% of the items in the weak hybrid cars are the same as traditional cars, and only 10% of them are different. As the degree of mixing increases, that is, the proportion of motors increases, the technology becomes more and more difficult.

Sina Automobile: So far, Delphi has not cooperated with domestic vehicle companies in the new energy vehicle electronic control system?

Li Wei: Now Delphi Pike has cooperation with a number of domestic vehicle companies, and the focus of the products with which each company cooperates is not the same. In fact, two or three years ago, Delphi began to promote some technologies in new energy vehicles in the Chinese market. Now we and some domestic vehicle companies have participated in the development of new energy vehicles this year and will be available next year.

Sina Auto: According to what you know, what kind of new energy car solution is more interested in domestic auto manufacturers?

Li Wei: At present, from the perspective of market sectors, the more mature product is a mild hybrid vehicle, because the technological difficulty it attaches is no longer there, the technical barriers have been solved, and the additional cost is not high, although it brings The return on profits is not high, but it is easily accepted by the market.

In addition, like the medium-duty hybrid system, there will be some new energy vehicles using such systems on the market next year, which indicates that the medium-hybrid technologies and products are gradually maturing.

Sina Auto: But we understand that many consumers do not plan to buy new energy vehicles. What do you think about the marketization of new energy vehicles?

Li Wei: This is a "chicken and egg" problem. Because of the lack of markets, sales are relatively small, so the corresponding costs will be higher. For consumers, energy saving is a good thing, but there can be no additional burden. The Chinese market has a relatively high cost requirement. What we are mainly doing now is to use China's resources to develop products suitable for this market in China. Then we will have some control in terms of technology and cost, and we can better cooperate with the OEM.

In fact, Delphi has been seeking to develop some common products in the new energy field, so that everyone can share, so that the amount of products will be relatively large, each vehicle company does not need to repeat the development, so that the development cost of new energy vehicles will be reduced .

Sina Automobile: What do you think is unique about China's new energy automobile market compared with the United States?

Li Wei: The Chinese market has a distinct feature that is a relatively high cost requirements, consumers are not too high but the performance requirements of the car is relatively price-sensitive, based on such a market, we believe that strong hybrid and plug-in car The share in the Chinese market is limited because the additional costs are too high.

I think that in the future, the new energy automobile market in China will soon cross the stage of hybrid power and enter the electric vehicle stage. China has a very good foundation for electric vehicles. China has a very large user base for electric bicycles. In addition, the cost of small electric vehicles is much lower than that of strong hybrids and plug-in vehicles. Therefore, such products will be more suitable for the Chinese market. If Chinese auto companies have made breakthroughs in battery and motor problems, I believe that China may soon enter the era of electric vehicles, and Delphi is now actively preparing for the day.
