This new type of material is fundamentally different from the plastics currently being used in large numbers. The main component of plastics is polyvinyl chloride derived from petroleum. This kind of polyvinyl chloride, which is difficult to be naturally decomposed, is the main cause of plastic pollution.
Experts at the Missouri University of Technology are considering how to choose bio-based fillers, such as adding starch and fiber to their products, and minimizing costs in various commercial applications.
Dr. Saharah, Ph.D., of the University of Missouri Research Center, said: “Polyethylene lactic acid, a new plastic component, will be decomposed within 45 to 60 days if it is placed in a slightly warmer natural environment. After being decomposed, this material then reacts with water and breaks down into small molecules, which then dissolve into minerals or become carbon dioxide in water. It is estimated that in the natural state, the entire decomposition process of plastic bottles can be completed within 4 months. carry out."
