Recently, the American Manufacturing Technology Association (AMT) and the American Machine Tool Distributors Association (AMTDA) published the latest statistics on the US machine tool spending. In September 2010, the United States received orders for machine tools in 1992, an increase of 38.6% over the previous month's 1437. Among them, the number of orders for metal-cutting machine tools was 1,862, and the number of orders for metal-forming machines was 130. In September 2010, the total consumption of U.S. machine tools was US$400 million, a significant increase of 66.1% from the US$241 million in the previous month and an increase of 156.8% from the US$156 million in September 2009. From January to September 2010, the cumulative spending of U.S. machine tools was 2.09 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 74.1% from the 1.2 billion U.S. dollars in the same period of 2009.
From the perspective of product category, in September 2010, the U.S. metal cutting machine tool consumption was 364 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 59.2% from the previous month's 229 million U.S. dollars, and a substantial increase of 170% from the 139 million U.S. dollars in September 2009. The spending on metal forming and manufacturing machines was US$35.58 million, an increase of 196.2% from US$10.1 million last month and an increase of 71% from US$20.81 million in September 2009. From January to September 2010, US metal cutting machine tool consumption was 1.938 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 86.7% year-on-year; metal forming and manufacturing machine tool spending was 152 million U.S. dollars, a year-on-year decline of 6.4%.
AMTDA chairman Peter Borden said: “September 2010 can be said to be a watershed for the industry from the recession of 2008-2009 to recovery. In September, the sales of US machine tools reached 1992, which is the highest since September 2008. Reflects the rebound in the industry and the controlled status of the U.S. manufacturing industry."
