Smart grid construction promotes growth of the meter market

[China Meter Network Digital Reading Market] In recent years, the smart grid has become an important measure for the world's major countries, especially the developed countries. Countries have formulated plans and policies to take concrete actions to accelerate the development of smart grid technology and industry. The continuous promotion of this process has not only increased the energy use rate and developed a green economy, but also brought about tremendous development opportunities for smart meter manufacturers.

At the end of August this year, the Northeast Group of the American Business Research Corporation released the latest report. From 2015 to 2025, South America will invest 38.1 billion U.S. dollars for the promotion of the modernization of electric power infrastructure. According to analysis, the large-scale deployment of the smart grid infrastructure in South America has already begun. In the next 10 years, the region is expected to become an important market for smart grid infrastructure investment. Brazil hopes to use the smart grid to curb rampant power theft, improve grid reliability and establish a power infrastructure, and is therefore keen to promote smart meters.

“At present, Brazil is the largest smart grid investment market in South America,” said Ben Gordon, president of North East Group. “After experiencing some unsuccessful initial projects, Brazil is carrying out large-scale deployment of smart grid actions. In 2014, Brazil Utilities companies have announced that they will invest US$25.6 billion in smart grid construction in the next 10 years,” Gordon added. “Overall, the future of the smart grid market in South America is very bright. It is expected that in the next 10 years, the entire South America A total of $22.6 billion will be invested in smart meter installations, $7.2 billion will be used to boost distribution automation, and $8.3 billion will be used in other smart grid market segments."

The International Energy Agency estimates that by 2020 the smart grid will cover 80% of the world's population. In the construction of smart grids, the Indian government also announced plans to build 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022 and establish plans for 100 smart cities. To achieve these goals requires a lot of investment. Therefore, the National Grid of India plans to provide 60 million US dollars to implement 14 smart grid demonstration projects. Most of the projects focus on meter-related applications to reduce theft, improve power quality, and support dynamic pricing structures. This plan also includes the integration of distribution automation and renewable energy. Other well-known projects include a $5.3 billion integrated power development plan, a $5.4 billion plan to upgrade the agricultural distribution network, and $800 million to improve the Northeast region's power system.

With the development of smart grid construction, electric energy meter has also set off a smart innovation. The outbreak of market demand in different regions in different stages has formed the main driving force for the continued growth of the global smart meter market. In the Southeast Asian market, Pike Research expects that the smart meter market will be in rapid development by 2020. According to statistics, Indonesia will install 1 million prepaid meters and will soon become the largest prepaid meter market in the world. At the same time, the Indonesian National Power Company will provide Keypad meters for all power connection devices and will also widely replace old residential meters.

Brazil will be the first country to install smart meters on a large scale. In the next 10 years, Brazil’s major power companies plan to invest US$15.2 billion to complete the installation of approximately 63.50 million smart meters. As early as September of this year, ELO Sistemas Eletronicos, the main meter supplier in Brazil, announced that it had obtained government approval to become Brazil's first energy company approved to manufacture and supply smart grid products. Next, in cooperation with Echelon, the company will mass produce single-phase, multiphase, and current transformer meters. Analysts had expected that this year, sales of smart grid-related products in Latin American countries will increase from the current 100 million US dollars to 1 billion US dollars, of which more than half are expected from Brazil.

Smart grid construction and smart meter production are closely linked with each other, but not with each other. Large-scale global smart grid construction will bring a broader market space for smart energy meters. From the perspective of the process of building smart grids in various regions of the world, There is still a certain gap to achieve true intelligence, but this will not affect the hot future of smart meters, as well as the table-reading system after successful construction of smart grids.
