The original Saab electric vehicle supplier will cooperate with Beijing Automotive

Boston-Power, a battery manufacturer based in Massachusetts, used to be a supplier to Saab, the Swedish automotive company. After Saab announced its bankruptcy, the company was also in adversity. At present, Boston has regrouped its batteries and launched new cooperation projects with Chinese companies.

The company will supply battery packs to the Beijing Electric Vehicle Company, which is a subsidiary of Beijing Automotive Corporation (B.A.I.C.). The model jointly produced by both parties is the electric version of the Beiqi C70 sedan.

In a telephone interview, Christina Lampe-Onnerud, founder and chairman of the Boston Battery Company, said that after three years of cooperation with BAIC, the company has taken the “fast track”. ". Lamp-Onalud said that her familiarity with Saab series models has helped the development of BAIC C70 electric vehicles. She said that this model will be sold in China and will produce "hundreds" this year. The 30 kWh battery pack on this model can be fully charged within 8 hours with a 220 volt power supply, after which the car can travel approximately 160 kilometers.

This model contains a large part of Saab's pedigree. The C70 sedan was developed on the basis of the previous generation Saab 9-5 vehicle, which was developed during General Motors' ownership of Saab. In 2010, Saab was acquired by Spyker. In 2009, Beiqi purchased the license to manufacture Saab 9-5 models. Lamp-Onalud said, “Once we put so much energy into the Saab platform, we finally achieved results in this way. This process is really interesting.” General Motors is concerned that certain technologies of the company will Used by Chinese competitors, it actually blocked the sale of Saab to a group of Chinese investors last year. As a result, Spyker filed a lawsuit against General Motors in Detroit on Monday, claiming more than $3 billion.

The battery pack for this new model will initially be produced at the Boston Battery Company's Taiwan plant, but Boston Battery is also building a factory in Liyang, Jiangsu Province, in eastern China. The first phase of the project will be completed by the end of 2012. It is expected that the new plant will produce battery cells, and the battery cells produced here will be assembled into battery packs in Beijing to meet the demand of 12,000 vehicles each year. As planned, by the end of 2014, the plant is expected to expand its production capacity to meet the needs of another 24,000 vehicles.

"Our opportunities for electric vehicles in China that we observed in 2009 and 2010 were correct," said Lamp-Onalud. "China has made important commitments in the five-year plan." She said that even though It is not known how the C70 electric car will be priced, but compared with other electric cars on the Chinese market, the C70 will be competitive.

Fang Qing, general manager of Beiqi New Energy, said in a statement: “The policy announced by China is to occupy the world's leading position in the R&D process shifting towards clean energy. We intend to produce thousands of hybrid and electric vehicles. We are very Admire Boston Battery's green technology and high-performance technology.” It is estimated that Boston Battery’s Swing battery product line has a lifespan of up to 10 years and can operate over a wide temperature range. Lamp-Onalud said that the C70 sedan does not require a dedicated cooling system for the battery pack.

Last year, Johnson Controls and its partner, French battery company Saft, announced that they will supply batteries for BAIC New Energy's C30 compact and M30 off-road vehicles. Rebecca K. Fitzgerald, spokesperson for Johnson Controls, said in an e-mail that the company's "cooperation" with BAIC continues, but did not disclose the details of the cooperation between the two parties. .
