The sluggish rents and high oil prices have given rise to a strong interest in fuel-saving measures. Following the introduction of a fuel efficiency guide for bulk carriers in April this year, DNV released three new guidelines on fuel efficiency for tankers, bulk carriers and container ships on November 29th.
DNV released the first edition of the Bulk Carrier Fuel Efficiency Guide in April this year. “We received good feedback from the bulk ship owners and operators, which prompted us to update this guide to cover more areas and provide more details. Due to the sluggish market rents and rising oil prices, this is currently The demand for an objective guide is very strong,†said Michael Aasland, Manager of DNV Bulk Shipping.
In addition to the updated fuel efficiency guidelines for bulk carriers, DNV also issued fuel efficiency guidelines for tankers and container ships.
“The fuel efficiency guidelines for tankers are oil tankers including existing vessels and new design vessels, providing a concise overview of the choice of fuel-saving measures and their specific operational characteristics. Tanker tenants who frequently pay for fuel may be IMO. (IMO)'s New Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is included as part of their approval process, and EEDI will be applied to new vessels ordered from January 1, 2013. DNV's Fuel Efficiency Guide and its associated related investments The rate of return analysis calculator and DNV's consulting services will provide highly relevant supplemental and decision support for tanker designers, shipyards and shipowners,†said Jan Koren, Director of DNV Tanker Business.
“Fuel is the main cost factor for container ships. Low-speed navigation and reduced container volume make it important to choose the right measures to reduce fuel consumption. The new operating environment will affect the implementation of new designs and fuel-saving measures. But many ship owners will also choose Renovating the original design,†said Jost Bergman, Director of DNV Container Ships.
The three fuel efficiency guidelines were jointly issued by DNV and HSVA, and the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI) participated in the cooperation of the fuel efficiency guidelines for bulk carriers. These new guidelines also include the impact of different fuel-saving measures on EEDI and the Ship Energy Efficiency Operational Index (EEOI). Both EEDI and EEOI have been approved by IMO at the 62nd World Congress.
The ROI calculators attached to these guidelines can be used for economic benefit analysis based on future oil prices, interest rates, fuel consumption estimates, and investment and maintenance costs. The calculator will give the net present value, rate of return and return period for the selected fuel economy device.
To further assist shipowners, in addition to three guides and a free ROI calculator, DNV also provides consulting services for shipowners and operators, from initial equipment screening to verification of equipment effectiveness, based on advanced fluid dynamics. (CDF) calculation.
“Through the new guidelines for tankers, bulk carriers and container ships, we hope shipowners and operators can more easily achieve cost savings, improve environmental performance, and be more competitive in difficult market conditions.†Director of Operations, Maritime Division Trond Hodne said.
