Petrochemical industry has great potential for carbon emission reduction

“Our country is facing tremendous pressure for carbon emission reduction and the petrochemical industry has a lot to offer.” At the 2009 Shaanxi Energy and Chemical Equipment Industry Development Forum and Investment Promotion Project Promotion Conference held at the end of October, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chemical Science and Technology of Tsinghua University The president of the institute, Jin Yong, has high hopes for the role of the petrochemical industry in carbon reduction. He said that due to the rapid development of the economy, people have continuously “moved” underground carbon to the ground, causing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to increase continuously. If it is not controlled, humans will destroy it in their own hands.

The reporter learned from the meeting that in order to curb the impact of increasing carbon emissions on humankind, the "Kyoto Protocol" clearly stipulates that by 2010, all developed countries' carbon dioxide and other six kinds of greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 5.2% compared with 1990. Although the U.S. government is the only developed country that has not yet signed a contract, after President Obama took office, he has formulated a grand energy-saving emission reduction and renewable energy development plan. As the largest developing country in the world and a major trading country for the United States, China must increase its carbon reduction efforts both in terms of building a responsible big country image and in considering sustainable development of its own economy.

Jin Yong analysis, in theory, the development of low-carbon economy, to achieve carbon emissions in three ways: through the development of renewable energy sources to achieve governance; through process control to achieve energy-saving emission reduction; through carbon dioxide capture and reuse to achieve end governance. From the factors affecting carbon emission reduction, it mainly includes total population, per capita GDP, energy consumption per unit of GDP, and carbon dioxide emitted by unit energy consumption. However, based on China's actual national conditions, among these four major factors, the three factors of total population, per capita GDP, and unit energy consumption are all not conducive to carbon emission reduction. Therefore, the current reality is more conducive to China's carbon reduction. There is only one factor: reducing energy consumption per unit of GDP.

On the one hand, China's unit GDP energy consumption is 1/3 higher than the international advanced level, and there is a huge space for energy conservation and emission reduction. On the other hand, China's industrial, agricultural and other fields of production technology, some are only equivalent to the level of the developed countries in the 1990s, through independent innovation, the introduction of digestion and absorption of advanced technology, the transformation of existing production processes, energy saving The potential for emission reduction is huge. In addition, in the national economic structure, the proportion of primary and secondary industries in China is relatively high. With the same production value, the tertiary industry can save energy by 1/3 over the second industry. Under the guidance of national industrial policies, the pace of industrial restructuring in China is accelerating, and the proportion of tertiary industry is rising, which is conducive to carbon reduction.

When talking about the role of various industrial sectors in carbon emission reduction, Jin Yong said that the petrochemical industry has much to offer. First of all, the petrochemical industry itself is a large consumer of energy, energy and carbon emissions, and the structural contradictions of the industry are relatively prominent. It is urgent to adjust the structure and industrial layout as soon as possible, eliminate a large number of backward production capacity and excess production capacity, and save energy and reduce carbon consumption. Great.

Secondly, the petrochemical enterprises’ awareness of energy conservation and environmental protection has been increasing in recent years. Wastewater and residual pressure utilization, comprehensive utilization of “three wastes”, dry coke quenching, polyvinyl chloride and other energy-saving and environment-friendly new technologies and new technologies emerge in endlessly. Make the industry's energy consumption indicators significantly lower.

Third, the petrochemical industry is a pillar industry of the national economy. Its products are widely used in various fields such as industry, agriculture, national defense, and people's lives. The technological advancement or upgrading of the industry can not only promote the reduction of the energy consumption level of the industry itself and the reduction of carbon emissions, but also drive and promote the progress of energy conservation and emission reduction in relevant industries and fields. Such as polyurethane, powder coatings, water-based coatings and other new environmental protective coatings, and plastic water supply and drainage pipelines, heating facilities and other products to promote the use of energy consumption in the construction industry can be reduced by at least 1/3.

In addition, technological progress in the petrochemical industry has made "end-of-pipe governance" possible. The application of new petrochemical technologies and new processes can not only reduce the energy consumption in the production process and reduce carbon emissions, but also enable the carbon dioxide emissions to be recycled. For example, the breakthrough and application of carbon dioxide degrading plastics technology can process a large amount of carbon dioxide emitted by cement and other industries into high-value-added environmentally friendly degradable plastics; the advent of carbon dioxide to produce dimethyl carbonate technology, which can discharge a large amount of industrial production Carbon dioxide is converted into fine chemical products such as dimethyl carbonate; other processes such as oxo synthesis can convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce methane, methanol, carbon fiber, engineering plastics, asphalt, and construction materials, which can not only reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but also reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Widening the space for hydrogen energy utilization and accelerating the development of the "hydrogen economy".

Jin Yong revealed that China has already mastered carbon capture, separation, and purification technologies. The technology in the field of comprehensive utilization of carbon dioxide is equivalent to the world's advanced level. These provide China with the realization of the use of carbon dioxide, large-scale utilization, and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Strong technical support.

Based on the fact that natural gas is rich in hydrogen and coal is used as a "carbon excess" in the process gas, some experts suggest that the state should use more natural gas for chemical production, and combine natural gas chemical industry with coal chemical industry to achieve complementary advantages. In addition to improving resource utilization, CO2 emissions are reduced. At the same time, the state should introduce more preferential policies to support the research and development of carbon dioxide comprehensive utilization technology and the development of related enterprises, and to promote China's carbon comprehensive utilization industry to become bigger and stronger.
