Titanium dioxide industry development bottlenecks yet to be broken

The titanium dioxide industry is in good condition, but there is still a bottleneck that needs urgent breakthrough. This was the consensus reached by the delegates at the meeting of the Titanium Divider Center of the National Chemical Industry Productivity Promotion Center held recently in Wuxi, Jiangsu.

In 2006, the actual total output of China's titanium dioxide industry reached 860,000 tons, an increase of 23% year-on-year, and it was the highest annual growth rate. China has become the second largest titanium dioxide producer in the world. At present, there are as many as 20 titanium dioxide expansion projects (projects) at various stages of construction, design, or planning across the country. If these projects are eventually implemented as planned, the total production capacity of China's titanium dioxide industry will exceed that of 2010 by far. The United States ranks first in the world.

Titanium resource tension has become the biggest bottleneck in the development of the titanium white industry at this stage. China is the world’s largest producer of titanium resources, but the development of the titanium ore raw material industry is far from being synchronized with the titanium dioxide industry and it has to rely on the import of titanium ore from abroad to supplement the market. Last year, the quantity of imported titanium ore in China accounted for about 1/3 of the total titanium ore demand in the country and it is still rising. With the titanium dioxide industry's soaring demand for titanium resources, coupled with the depletion of some of the traditional titanium mineral resources in the country, the supply of titanium ore in the industry is tight, prices have risen sharply, and even the grade cannot be guaranteed.

In recent years, the country has continuously strengthened its environmental protection efforts, encouraged the development of chlorination titanium dioxide, and restricted the development of sulfuric acid titanium dioxide. The realization of cleaner production will be the key to whether the industry can achieve sustainable development.

In addition, as China has repeatedly adjusted its import and export tax rates in recent years, it gradually encourages the import of resources and products that are conducive to technological innovation, and controls the export of high energy consumption, high pollution, and resource exports. The foreign anti-dumping trend toward Chinese products has been further strengthened and related intellectual property issues will also bring a series of major challenges to Chinese export-oriented titanium dioxide companies.
